Bubba slows things down for holidays

"So, you're too busy for us now, is that the deal?"
I sighed. Bubba Castiron was on the other end of the phone and it was a call I really didn't have time for.
"No, Bubba. I-"
"Then what, Timmons? We kind of enjoyed reading what you wrote each week and now you say you're not going to do it anymore. What's up with that?"
I had to admit that it's always a bit pleasing on the ego to hear someone say they like the fruits of our labor.
"Well thanks, Bubba," I said. "I'm glad to hear that you found pleasure in my little offerings."
"Yeah, they were great. We used to have a pool and whoever found the first mistake would win a quarter from everyone."
So much for ego.
"What can I do for you, Bubba? I'm kind of busy here."
My lack of patience didn't phase him.
"Aw hell, Timmons, me and Gumball, Tater, Big Country, Elvis and Bambi was all just sitting around and we decided to give you a hard time, so here we are."
"That's great, Bubba, and now if-"
"Cause you know what, Timmons, if friends don't take the time then who will?"
"Gee, I don't know Bubba, but I really-"
"It doesn't have anything to do with the calendar either, although it is a pretty special time of year."
"Yes it is," I said. "Now if you don't mind I-"
"D'ya ever notice what a hurry you're always in, Timmons? Why Big Country was just saying the other day that you haven't been to our place in quite a while. When's the last time you sat down, took a load off and had a cold tallboy with some friends?"
"I've been kind of busy, Bubba and-"
"Timmons, listen to me. You need to stop and smell the Christmas tree, know what I mean? You are a lucky man. You get to work with people like Paula Dunn and Brad Cook and Jan Baker and Teri Ditslear and a bunch of others. Your staff there, people like Tina and Scott and Pam and Sean and Neil and Conor and Sarah and John and Joel and Frank . . . Hey Elvis, did I leave anybody out?"
I heard a muffled "Don't reckon so" in the background.
"Some of us really enjoy the work y'all do," Bubba said. "We can't wait to see where in the past Mr. Cook and Ms. Paula are going to take us. We was all right proud to hear that Jan found Mr. Right. Teri gives us some good things to think about - and sometimes we kinda, sorta need that - and we even like reading about the city from hiz honor the mayor.
"Thing is Timmons, if it wasn't for your folks we wudda' missed the funeral of an old pal a few weeks ago. We wudda missed reading about the good folks at Summers Plumbing having a food drive that we contributed to. We . . ."
Bubba was still talking but once again his somewhat different point of view made me stop and think. Bubba has a true knack for somehow putting things in perspective for me. During the midst of all the holiday rush he reminded me to slow down and appreciate the very people who work hard to bring you Hamilton County's only daily newspaper. And they're not the only ones that need some love. That's where you, dear reader, come in. So from all of us at The Times, including Bubba & the gang from the Crawl-On-Inn, we want to offer you two things. First, a big thank you for reading The Times. And next, we want to wish you and yours the most Merry Christmas ever!
