Harlow Hickenlooper still thrills his 'kids'

If you are of a particular age and grew up around central Indiana, chances are you just might be familiar with Harlow Hickenlooper.
Harlow, otherwise known as Hal Fryar, could be found every Saturday morning on WFBM, Channel 6. He and sidekick Curley Myers were the hosts of the Three Stooges Show.
Now 80, Hal lives in Franklin and still stays busy, although he doesn't do much water skiing on Lake Holiday anymore.
Water skiing? Lake Holiday?
"We had so many wonderful connections to Crawfordsville," Hal said during a recent interview. "You could tell your readers that I was a good friend of General Lew Wallace . . . "
OK, maybe not.
"Well, I have enjoyed his museum," Hal quipped.
"My wife worked for Will Hays at Lilly Endowment," he said of Crawfordsville's former mayor. "We loved that man. He was so kind, so generous, so thoughtful.
But water skiing?
"And we have a son-in-law who graduated from Wabash College."
OK. But Lake Holiday?
"Well, we had so many connections and when we discovered Lake Holiday . . . we found a lake-front lot. The family learned to water ski there and we had so many good times out there. It was a great place for the family."
Of course anyone who ever watched Hal as Harlow remembers the slapstick comedy, the pies in the face and the famous Happy Birthday song.
"Last Tuesday night I sang happy birthday to a fellow out in Colorado by phone," Hal said, explaining the request came here locally. "People stumble on my Web site or my name might pop up in a newspaper or somewhere. Mostly, they say 'is he still alive?' "
At 80, he hasn't lost any of his sense of humor.
Hal still keeps in touch with Cowboy Curley Myers. He said that Curley will be celebrating his 88th birthday on April 1.
Hal still does shows, although he aims at the baby boomers now instead of the youngsters. From the Red Hat Society to church groups, Hal has a pretty busy schedule. You can find out more on his Web site, which is www.halfryar.com. Harlow, er, Hal, is available for speaking and other engagements.
"I probably average two shows per month. I speak at a lot of church lunches because they have more time during the day. I've done a couple of high school reunions, too, although I haven't worked too hard at getting those.
"I just want to thank everyone. We were on the air for 10 years and we never could have done that without everyone. I thoroughly enjoy people and I hope that came through over the television. I sincerely hope people know that they gave me as much joy as I hope I gave them."
